If you’re not doing this… You won’t perform!
Our world is moving exponentially faster than it used to, and with it becomes the challenge to focus. FOCUS is what it takes to create results. Focus is what matters. If you ever feel like there is too much to do, not enough time, and find yourself jumping between tasks without completing them, you’re not alone. With constant interruptions, competing priorities and the need to manage and lead your team, the tendency to get off target increases.
So how do you stay focused?
Telling yourself to stay focused is always a good idea, yet there are other ways to train your brain outside of work that will benefit you when the need to focus is dire. Here are 3 keys to have focused attention.
1. Put reflection on your calendar!
I conducted an in-depth research study of business women with the goal of assessing how they benefit from reflective thinking. One of my major findings was the increased ability to focus (as well as increased emotional intelligence and a reduction of stress). Simply put, spend time each day reflecting. How to do this? Set aside time, 10- 20 minutes a day. Sit quietly where you won’t be disturbed, or perhaps do some light stretching. Reflect on the priorities of your day. Spend time visualizing what you want to happen. Commit in your mind to the deliverables for the day. Anticipate the obstacles and prepare for how you will overcome them to stay focused.
2. Choose to meditate!
Daniel Goldman, an emotional intelligence thought leader, suggests adopting the daily practice of meditation. Learning how to empty the mind is a discipline that translates to staying focused. Start with small doses of time – either in a group or with an instructor – to learn the best practices. The emptying of the mind is beneficial and also assists in your reflective practice.
3. Put boundaries on technology!
Are you checking email more than you need? Perhaps your phone is always on ring, or sitting next to you? Research shows it takes 29 minutes to get back into what you are doing after being distracted. Setting boundaries for when and how often you text, call, email, look at Instagram or LinkedIn are crucial elements for managing your time and therefore, your focus.
Start practicing focused attention right now! Commit to what you need to do differently, and if you need help changing your leadership behaviors and developing new habits, email me at the address below and we can discuss executive coaching options through your company.
